Health, Safety and Quality Control Assistant Manager 

Ward are recruiting for an experienced Health, Safety and Quality professional to join the business.

 The role:
Reporting to the Health, Safety & Quality Control Manager you will assist in the development, implementation and monitoring of the company’s integrated management system, whilst also providing advice and guidance to operational managers, supervisors and employees. 

 You will play a vital role in implementing the overall QHS strategy across all locations in England and Wales. This will include the development and delivery of training, tool box talks and safety alerts for communication within the organisation.  

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Attend HSQC Meetings to ensure that Ward’s Health, Safety and Quality Objectives are being met,  
  • Attend Quarterly QHSE Meetings to ensure that communication, consultation and participation requirements are being met, 
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 45001:2018, ISO 9001:2015, BS EN 15713:2009 certifications and all aspects of Ward’s statutory and regulatory obligations, plus any additional recommendations made by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), 
  • In consultation with the workforce, support with the development, review, communication and implementation of H&S Procedures / Safe Operating Procedures (SOPs), 
  • Maintain and update the Integrated Management System, 
  • In consultation with the workforce, support with the development, review and communication of suitable and sufficient Risk Assessments (RAs),  
  • Evaluate and maintain Contractor Compliance, 
  • Completion and communication of regular QHS inspections across the business, 
  • Recording and investigation accidents, incidents, and near misses reported across the business, including reporting RIDDOR incidents to the HSE, where applicable, 
  • Identification and provision of adequate PPE, 
  • Participation in the procurement of suitable machinery / equipment,  
  • Keeping up to date with, and understanding, applicable Legislation, Policies and Standards, and ensuring these are communicated and embedded in Ward’s working practices and day-to-day operations,  
  • Providing support and appropriate responses to tenders, bids and PQQs, and ensuring that Ward’s HSCQ credentials meet the requirements of our stakeholders, 
  • Participating in Internal and External Audits at planned intervals,  
  • Investigating non-conformities (NCs) and opportunities for improvement (OFIs), and implementing appropriate corrective actions,  
  • Educating employees at all levels of applicable Health, Safety and Quality Requirements and the impact of non-compliance, 
  • Deputising for the Health, Safety and Quality Control Manager as required. 

 

Your profile:
To be considered for this role you must meet the following criteria: 

  • Proven experience within a health and safety role and ready to work or currently working, at a Senior Advisor level or above. 
  • Demonstrable desire to learn and improve.
  • A genuine passion for the role.

 

Technical Competencies: 

  • NEBOSH General Certificate, or equivalent (Mandatory)
  • NEBOSH Diploma, or equivalent (Preferred)
  • Understanding of ISO45001 and 9001 (Preferred)
  • Auditing and inspection experience (Preferred)

Package:
The successful applicant will be offered a salary in the region of £45,000 plus company car.

We are looking for a full time Site Engineer to join our team, based at our site at Ilkeston (DE7 4RF).

You will be responsible for the day-to-day maintenance and implementation of a robust PPM schedule for mobile and fixed recycling equipment and provide technical support for reactive maintenance.

Task specific training will be given, and your existing certificates will be kept up to date.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Hydraulics, pneumatic and electrical fault finding and repair & replacement of components experience
  • Diesel engine experience
  • Wide range of experience in the fault finding/diagnosis and repair of mobile plant such as Liebherr/Sennebogen material handlers, Liebherr/CAT Loading shovels, Telehandlers, FLT’S
  • Full UK driving license
  • Welding experience (MIG/ARC) + Burning/Cutting with propane/oxygen advantageous
  • Ability to work on own initiative or as part of a team
  • Conscientious, organised and driven with good communication skills
  • Basic computer knowledge for updating the maintenance scheme upon tasks completed
  • Experience of a manufacturing/processing environment
  • Time served with relevant plant operation certificates

As a load inspector operator based at Ward, Ilkeston, you will serve as the compliance operative responsible for ensuring material suitability for the site. You will be responsible for photographing and identifying material composition of inbound loads. You will also assist in maintain the traffic flow of the site. This is a customer facing role and requires good communication and people skills. You will be a member of a small team of inspectors but at times you will work independently inspecting individual areas.

An overview of the role:

  • You will be a point of communications for customers
  • You will report on material compositions of loads identifying non-conforming materials
  • Through photographing inbound materials you will maintain site material acceptance procedures, identifying contamination levels
  • You will direct vehicles through the site controlling the flow of traffic
  • Your normal working hours will be 07.00 – 17.00 Monday to Friday

 Skills and Knowledge Required:

  • The job will require the use of basic software on company devices – full onsite system training will be provided
  • You will be highly motivated and trustworthy
  • You will have good communication and people skills
  • Due to the nature of a large site, there will be some moderate walking involved
  • Previous load inspector experience is beneficial, but not required
  • Experience within the metal/waste recycling industry is beneficial, but not required
  • Experience with traffic control and/or banksman training is beneficial, but not required

We have an opportunity for a 7.5 tonne driver to join our Compaction team based at our site in Ilkeston, Crompton Road, DE7 4BG.

You will be delivering wheelie bins to our customers across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. You will also complete waste collections and tip at the disposal location in Ilkeston. From time to time you might need to do some minor repairs on the wheelie bins, like replacing bins lids, locks and wheels, but we’ll show you how to do this and give you the tools!

The role will involve 50-60 hours of work each week and so a can-do attitude and flexible approach is important. It might be necessary to work some of your hours at a weekend if we are providing bins to festivals and events. You’ll be paid an overtime rate for any hours worked above 40 each week and you’ll be paid weekly.

In addition to delivering wheelie bins you could also expect to assist with transporting parts to our workshops, cleaning containers and transporting colleagues to service providers.

We pride ourselves on the standard of our fleet of vehicles which are all less than 5 years old. You will be part of a team of over 100+ driving professionals all committed to doing their part in environmental sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

You will play a key role in our business, transporting materials from our customers to our processing sites.

A typical day will include:

– Communicating with your planner and following daily schedules

– Liaising with customers and clients on site, maintaining good relationships

– Conducting thorough pre-start vehicle checks

– Reporting any vehicle defects

– Following company Safe Operating Procedures

– Taking care of your vehicle

– Completing daily checks and paperwork

Skills and Knowledge Required:

– Drivers Licence (up to 7.5 tonne)

– Current DCPC Card

– Good geographical knowledge

– Tachograph/ digital smart card operation

Ward are an award winning, family business who operate in the waste management and recycling sector across the East Midlands, North West and York. We are looking for an Environment & Sustainability Manager to join our business. 

The role of the Environment & Sustainability Manager is to ensure that Ward fulfils its environment and sustainability legal compliance obligations, maintains its ISO 14001:2015 accreditation, meets all the required standards to maintain Ward’s environmental permits and implement Ward’s 10-year sustainability roadmap, The Ward Way. 

As the manager of this small and important department, you will work in partnership with the Board of Directors, HR and Operations Managers across our nine locations, and group companies, to achieve and implement The Ward Way. We are working towards achieving our net zero targets and other sustainability goals whilst remaining competitive within the marketplace.  

 You will collect and analyse data, produce reports and make recommendations to The Board. You will use your commercial awareness to contribute to bids and tenders and represent the company at external events, such as the BMRA Low Carbon Committee and CIWM Waste Regulation SIG, so having excellent communication skills and a passion for your role at Ward is essential. You will keep abreast of developments within the sector and participate in conferences and other knowledge sharing platforms.  You will have a visible presence across all of our sites, conducting site audits and liaising with operational teams regularly.

You will be responsible for supporting the delivery of Wards ISO Environmental Management System ISO14001:2015.  

To be considered for this position, you will need a degree in an environmental discipline and have at least 3 years experience in an Environmental Management or Senior Sustainability role and have experience with reporting through EcoVardis or similar platform. Experience within the waste and recycling sector would be advantageous.

You will manage one direct report (Environment Advisor) and therefore previous management experience is essential.  

You will undertake a varied role and take the lead in delivering ESOS, SECR, Decarbonisation Plan, SBTi and Climate Change Adaptation Plans. You will liaise with the Environment Agency occasionally and manage the company’s energy portfolio.  

The role will be based at one of our largest processing facilities in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. This is an office based role however visits to our nine locations is essential and an electric company car is provided.

  • Monitor materials and report and non-acceptable material items
  • Maintain clean and safe work environment
  • Carry out general yard duties when required

Skills and Knowledge Required:

The successful candidate will have experience working as a 360 Material Handler Operator. They will be self-motivated, hardworking, a team-player and be willing to work the occasional weekend when required. An NPORS Accreditation is preferred however not essential.

  • Experience operating Crane / Material Re-Handler and other equipment in a safe, competent manner
  • Monitor materials and report any non-acceptable material items
  • Reform material pile to ensure most effective grab volume
